What impact will the Winter Energy Payment have on #FlickLife

With temperatures dropping across the country (brrrr!), it’s great to know that the Government’s winter energy payment is up and running (as at 1 May) to help keep Kiwis warm during the colder months.

The proposal was first announced back in October last 2017, and it’s been something we’ve supported right from the get-go. Why? Because, here at Flick, we believe that the message of ‘use less power’ to those of us struggling with the cost of energy is the wrong one. We’re proud to offer a new model of buying electricity – at a fair and transparent price – that means our customers can afford to use the energy they need to live well.

Let’s take a look at what the Winter Energy Payment means for Flicksters.

First up, am I able to receive the payment?

You’re eligible if you’re on one of the following schemes: New Zealand Superannuation, Veteran’s Pension, Jobseeker Support, Jobseeker Support Student Hardship, Sole Parent Support, Supported Living Payment, Youth Payment, Young Parent Payment or the Emergency Benefit.

You don’t need to do anything to get the payment if you’re eligible for it – it’ll be paid to you automatically.

How long does the payment run?

2018’s payment was be paid out over 13 weeks, from July to October. This year, in 2019, it has been extended to the full 22 weeks, running from 1 May until 1 October.

Great! What amount will I receive?

For single folks with no dependent children, you’ll receive $20.46 a week. Couples and people with dependent children will receive $31.82 a week.

Do I have to spend it on my power bill?

Not at all. You can choose to use it on whatever you think will best benefit your household through the colder winter months. That might mean investing in some thick thermal curtains or draught-stoppers for around your doors and windows, installing insulation, or purchasing a load of firewood. It’s up to you.

Can I put the money into my Flick Volt?

Oh you #CleverFlicker, you! If you do choose to use your payment on your Flick bill, then tucking it away in your Flick Volt could be a flickin’ good option to help manage the weekly budget and keep your home toasty all winter long.

How will Volt work with the Winter Energy Payment plan? It’s all plain sailing here, Flicksters! That’s because when you open a Flick Volt you get to choose a Regular Payment amount to pay to Flick each week in order to build up your Volt for those higher bills. If the amount you pay is higher than your bill, the difference goes into your Volt and the money in your Volt then works like a credit against your Flick account, that’s only used when the criteria you’ve set are met.

So, simply by adding the Winter Energy Payment onto your Regular Payment amount in Volt, you’ll be able to lift your regular contributions to Volt easily – and always have the extra money there for when you need it. Sweet!

Is there anything else that can help me keep my home warm?

There sure is. Check out EECA’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme, too. It’s offering grants to low-income home owners to help with some of the costs of installing underfloor and ceiling insulation, as well as moisture barriers. Funding is limited, though, so if you (or anyone you know) is eligible to apply, head over to their website (link above), find a service provider in your area and give them a bell.

Wait! I’ve still got a few questions…

No worries! Give us a bell on 0800 4 FLICK, or drop us a line at hello@flickelectric.co.nz. We’re always here to help!
